Bannock Brae Goldfields Central Otago Pinot Noir

Earlier this year I assembled a tasting of more than 100 New Zealand pinots not exhibited at any of New Zealand’s official tastings around the world, and Bannock Brae was one of the best. Planted in 1998 and 1999, the vines of this single vineyard estate reached the magic turning point of 12 years of age in 2010, and it shows in impressive layers of accurate black cherries, blackberries and cherry kernel. Layers of mixed spice complexity lingers long on the palate amid the nuances of whole bunch complexity, lending hints of pipesmoke and mixed spice. A bargain Central Otago pinot of excellent length, balance, generous definition and fruit presence. $34 at Emporium.
