Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz

In years to come, 2009 Bin 28 is at risk of being lost between the blockbusters of 2008 and 2010. But like the underrated 1999, which ultimately emerged as a classic and long-lived vintage, 2009 will work its magic in the cellar. There is a restraint here that harks back to the classic vintages of Bin 28, with a focus on firm structure and fine tannins. Restrained oak presence supports and propels its primary, dark berry fruits. Fruit balance, tannin presence, acid integration and flavour persistence all point to a long life. Blended from Padthaway, Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and Robe and matured for twelve months in used American oak hogsheads. A $4 price rise is more than justified.
