You are invited to the champagne tasting of the year. 2002 was Champagne’s greatest vintage between 1996 and 2008, and has attained its full greatness at a glorious two decades of age.

Showcasing the top 13 wines of the vintage, this lunchis devoted exclusively to the very finest cuvées that epitomise this legendary season and its incredible transformation over the past 20 years. This list represents my personal selection of the very best of the best, based on recent tastings.

Champagne’s top 13 houses and growers are all represented, and I am greatly indebted to each for making cuvées of such rarity available for this unique occasion – including five en magnum. Plus Amour de Deutz 2008 on arrival – to set the pace!

Provenance is everything in the maturation of champagne, so almost every bottle has been painstakingly sourced and shipped direct from the cellars of its house over the past 15 months, exclusively for this occasion. Many have been disgorged especially for this tasting.

This tasting is the sequel to my Champagne Vintage 1996 25th Anniversary Lunch last year, declared by many guests to be the greatest wine experience of their life.

This is a unique tasting in the world, and a number of chef de caves are very much hoping to join us in person, pending the timing of this year’s vintage and their post-harvest commitments.

No vintage in Champagne’s recent history balances finesse, power and structure like 2002. Pierre Gimonnet’s Didier Gimonnet considers this the greatest harvest since 1990, ‘exemplifying the ultimate balance between elegance, concentration and freshness, nearly the best wine we could obtain’.
